Often times, a person's organs can deteriorate over time, or genetics or disease may prematurely destroy an organ. While one or several organs in a person may be damaged, the rest of the person's body can maintain healthy functions. This is a case when organ transplantation could be used to help the body sustain its health!

 

Organ transplants are â€‹medical procedures where an organ is taken from one body and placed into a recipient who has a damaged or missing organ. The most commonly transplanted organs are the kidney, liver, and the heart. Organ donors can be living or brain dead, and can be human or animal.


Organ transplants have helped in many lifesaving operations. Important medical breakthroughs, such as tissue typing and immunosuppressant drugs have helped transplants to be successful and keep people alive!
